Line 5 is an aging Enbridge pipeline which crosses hundreds of rivers that flow into the Great Lakes and runs through some of the most environmentally sensitive waters in North America, including the Straits of Mackinac, where Lakes Michigan and Huron meet. One rupture could devastate 700 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. The oil company's solution? Build an unprecedented tunnel and run the pipeline through it for the next 99 years, which doesn't eliminate the risk; it's a project that has never been attempted by a company with a history of massive oil spills, cutting corners, and repeatedly being fined for breaking the rules.
