The discussion will focus on challenges with our current food system, policies that can help facilitate a transition to sustainable healthy food systems, and innovative solutions to create behavior and social change.

After a 30 minute panel discussion and 15 minute Q&A, we will have an optional 30 minute networking session, where attendees can meet virtually 1:1 with each other and panelists through the Meetaway platform. This will allow 5 conversations lasting 5 minutes between attendees. Registration for networking done here

 

 

Get to know our amazing expert panelists:

 

Lasse Brun: Lasse Bruun is an advocacy expert in climate, sustainable agriculture and food systems. He is the CEO of 50by40, a collective impact food systems organisation with 70+ partner institutions. Lasse has led high-level international dialogues and campaigns in more than 20 countries, and in institutions such as the EU Parliament, FAO and the UNFCCC. He has championed Just Livestock Transition as the key to shifting the global food system to mitigate climate change, improve public health and revitalise rural economies. In 2020 Lasse was appointed global civil society lead for the United Nations Food System Summit Action Track 2 ‘Shift to sustainable consumption patterns’, and subsequently appointed co-led Action Area 3.2 ‘Manage sustainably existing food systems’. Originally from Denmark, Lasse is a postgrad in rhetoric and linguistics.

 

Allison Penner: Allison is Executive Director of Reimagine agriculture and is incredibly passionate about addressing the critical issues in the agricultural sector. Bringing a degree in Environmental Governance from the University of Guelph and experience in campaigning, advocacy and policy work, she delights in using a variety of tools to transform the food system.

Maddie Cohen: Maddie Cohen is a regulatory attorney at The Good Food Institute, or "GFI." GFI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to make the global food system better for the planet, people, and animals by accelerating the world's transition to alternative proteins. Maddie works on regulatory and policy issues affecting cultivated meat, plant-based foods, and fermentation-derived ingredients. Her areas of expertise include the domestic regulatory landscape, federal litigation, and international regulatory work through multilateral organizations. Before joining GFI, Maddie worked as an associate at the law firm Wiley Rein and as a law clerk to federal judge Robert C. Chambers.

Nika Moeini: Nika is an Iranian-Canadian author, policy analyst, and climate activist. She is the Organizer of Youth Climate Save Canada, a youth-run organization of youth 14-25 which educates on the link between climate change and animal agriculture, and advocates for policies to transition to sustainable food systems at the various levels of government while educating youth on the issues. Nika is the Youth Ambassador for Canada with the Plant Based Treaty, a global campaign to transition to sustainable food systems. Nika holds a Master of Arts in International Affairs from Carleton University and a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from the University of British Columbia, and has held various policy analyst roles at Global Affairs Canada and Employment and Social Development Canada. Nika is a Fellow with the Social Innovation Academy, part of the RAD Cohort with Youth Climate Lab, a Policy Advocacy Coordinator with the Canadian Business Youth Council for Sustainable Development, and a Global Shaper with Global Shapers Toronto.

 

Dara Karaskolis: Dara is a public health nutritionist working towards sustainable food systems transformation. She is a Global Youth Coordinator for the Act4Food Act4Change campaign. Dara is interested in how the food we eat is influenced by a multitude of interconnected determinants, including how this can create numerous opportunities for public health interventions on a global scale. She believes in the importance of health literacy and communicating nutrition to the public in a clear, concise and culturally appropriate manner. Dara is a core team member of Young Leaders for Health, an organisation that aims to nurture the next generation of leaders in global health by working on major health issues such as climate change and NCDs.

 

Sandy Wan: Sandy works at the intersection of sustainability, tech, and business to create a world where the most economical choice is also the most environmental choice. She is the Co-Founder & Executive Director of Lighter Foodprint, Canada's first organization to bring climate labels to restaurants, and a Program Manager at Amazon. In her previous roles, she worked in trade policy in the government, researched cleantech policy at a think-tank, helped launch an anti-consumerism sustainable clothing brand, and developed an international strategy for a cleantech startup working to measure air pollution.
