THRIVING FOODSCAPES: How urban design shapes what we eat.

Organizer: Gil Penalosa

What we eat is shaped by more than personal preference, nutrition knowledge, or price. The design of our neighborhoods—where food is available and visible, how safely and comfortably we can reach it, and whether public spaces support gathering and eating together—also influences our daily food choices. This webinar introduces the Thriving Foodscapes Approach, developed by Gehl and Cities for Better Health. Through examples from cities around the world, we will explore how food places, public space, and public life intersect—and how you can uncover the barriers people face in establishing healthy food routines. Participants will learn how these insights can inspire practical changes to public space, programs, and policies that make healthier, more sustainable choices easier and more equitable.
