TCAN Municipal Election Call to Action

The TCAN call-to-action has been developed with the diversity of member groups in mind. It is a broad framework that establishes what we ask of the next City Council while allowing for distinct messaging that reflects the unique aims of the people and communities TCAN members serve.

Support climate action that creates an affordable, healthy, and equitable Toronto

The direct impact of the climate crisis is already being felt by many residents and communities in our city. Toronto City Council has declared a climate emergency, and passed a climate plan, the TransformTO Net Zero Strategy.* The strategy will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create benefits for communities and protect residents. Our City Council must show stronger leadership by actioning and resourcing the climate strategy. No more delays.

In the first year of the new term, we call on Toronto City Council to:

  • Speed up: Accelerate implementation of climate solutions and report to residents on exactly how much progress Toronto has made towards our 2025 climate goal**

  • Act. Launch local planning processes and implement concrete solutions with communities most at-risk from climate-related extreme weather, working collaboratively to respond and adapt to our changing climate

  • Fund: Deliver a clear plan to fully and fairly fund climate action that uses the City’s powers and advocates for funding from all levels of government based on meaningful consultation with residents

In 2019, in response to a call to action by residents, community groups, and organizations, Toronto City Council unanimously declared a climate emergency adopting a stronger emissions reduction target of net zero by 2050 or sooner. In 2021, Toronto City Council adopted the TransformTO Net Zero Strategy, which commits Toronto to achieve a target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

**Toronto’s 2025 target is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions levels by 45% from 1990 levels.
